Our Story

Aurea Premium Mamajuana was founded with a passion for authentic Dominican flavors. We blend traditional recipes with high-quality ingredients to create a unique spirit that embodies the Caribbean and European heritage.

What is mamajuana?

A Taste Rooted In History

Originating in what is now known as the Dominican Republic, specific herbs were used as tea by the indigenous Taino people of the Caribbean. Upon arrival of Europeans to the region, alcohol was added, making it one of the oldest distilled spirits in the Americas.

About Aurea Premium Mamajuana

What are the traditional ingredients?

At Aurea we use traditional herbs and spices such as Anamú, Star Anis, Bohuco pega- palo, Albahaca, Cinnamon, Princess Vine, Marabeli, Clove, Agave leaves, and Timacle. We also add and ferment our mix of spiced rum, red wine, and honey. It is not uncommon to add fruits such as guava, or even molasses as well.

What does Mamajuana mean?

Etymology

The word mamajuana has French origins similar to the English word demijohn, which is a large squat bottle with a narrow neck. Traditionally covered in wicker, it is thought to be derived from the French “dame jeame“ (lady Jane). In Spanish speaking countries this was translated to Dama Juana eventually leading to the Dominican Republic pronunciation of “Mama Juana“ (mother Jane).

Cheers to unforgettable moments in every sip
